Motivation, Goal Setting and Dreams!

I enjoyed these classes so much.  One of the classes taught us the importance of setting goals, and how to stay motivated.

Basically, motivation is a drive, an inner need and a desire to do something. There are two types of motivations: extrinsic and intrinsic.

Extrinsic motivation is the “have” to mentality. It is the desire to delay work and procrastinate and find excuses to not complete a task. The motivation is very restricted because we feel like we have to do the work. For instance, I have to throw the trash away or I have to complete the assignment. It is also refer to McGregor’s theory X, which states that people are naturally lazy. People inherently dislike work and will find ways to avoid it.

Intrinsic motivation or Theory y is the idea that people are self-motivated, ambitious and exercise self-control. This type of motivation is the “what is in it for me” mentality. Our “have to” mentality becomes “choose to” now. For instance, I choose to throw the trash away because I want to have a clean kitchen. There is a satisfaction in the work I do, so I do it because I will have a clean kitchen as a result of that.

Setting Goals:
– The best way to achieve our goals is to write them. The minute we write our goals it creates a sense of awareness into our minds. We become aware of our goals because we have now written it down, and we can go back to that piece of paper anytime we want.
– Plan the goals-  visualize it, create an image of how it will be to reach that goal. Don’t worry about how to achieve it yet, just see it and imagine the end results.
– Make short-term achievable goals- making more realistic and measurable goals that we know we can achieve.
